4 IGBINEDION LECTURERS DIE IN AUTO CRASH

BENIN—TRAGEDY struck, Wednesday night, at the notorious Ovia River, on Benin-Shagamu expressway, when four lecturers of Igbinedion University, Okada, lost their lives as their car plunged into the river on their way to Benin City, Edo State.
The lecturers who lost their lives are Mr. Morgan Uwogiren, Lucky Ehiorobo, Mrs. Shirley Iwede of the University’s Department of Business Administration and Ms Shola Ajayi of Department of Banking and Finance.
Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, officials, who were still battling to recover the bodies, said that the corpses of the two women were still missing while those of the two men had since been deposited at the University of the Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, mortuary.
Mr. Amin Adewale of FRSC, explained that the accident occurred when the car, a Volkswagen Audi station wagon 80, crashed into the river near Ekiadolor, while trying to avoid an on-coming trailer.
It was gathered that the lorry was coming from the Benin end of the road and while trying to avoid a failed portion of the road, drove into the other lane, where the car conveying the lecturers was coming from. While trying to avoid a head-on collision, the Audi crashed into the river.
Igbinedion University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Okika, who  confirmed the incident said he was yet to be fully briefed on the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Vanguard gathered that one of the victims, Ms Shola Ajayi, of the Department of Banking and Finance, whose corpse was yet to be recovered at press time, was on her way back from Okada, where she had gone to submit her resignation letter to the university, having gotten another job with a government establishment.
Some of the students who spoke to Vanguard on the condition of anonymity, expressed shock over the incident, lamenting that the sad incident occurred when both students and staff of the university were celebrating the birthday of the Chancellor of the University.
